The Gospel Transforms Our Identity

What defines you? For many people, identity is tied to a job title, a relationship, or a personal achievement. But what happens when those things are gone? Colossians 3:1-14 gives believers a clear and grounding answer. Your true identity is found in Jesus Christ alone, and that identity changes everything about how you live.

Drawing from Colossians 3, Galatians 2:20, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and 1 Peter 2:9, this message explores what it means to be a new creation in Christ and what that identity looks like in everyday life. Three practical commitments emerge from the text for every follower of Jesus.

First, set your mind on Christ. Paul uses the present imperative tense in Colossians 3:1-3, meaning this is not a one-time decision. It is an ongoing, daily pursuit. Just as Jesus commands in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the kingdom of God, believers are called to be intentional about where their focus goes each morning, throughout the day, and into the evening.

Second, put sin to death. Paul names specific sins in Colossians 3:5-11, including sexual immorality, anger, malice, and slander, and calls believers to decisive action. Three words capture what this looks like in practice: watchfulness, prayerfulness, and self-discipline. The enemy is always looking for an opening, and dabbling with sin has real consequences for your life, your relationships, and your witness.

Third, put on Christlike character. Colossians 3:12-14 calls believers to clothe themselves in compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, and love. These are not feelings. They are decisions. And they are made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in every believer.

This message is grounded in the truth that transformation is ongoing. You are a work in progress, being renewed day by day through the process of sanctification. And when you stumble, 1 John 1:9 reminds us that God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse. There is always a fresh start in Christ.
