SERMON BREAKDOWN FROM APRIL 5TH, 2026

Four Truths About the Resurrection That Every Christian Must Know

The resurrection of Jesus Christ stands as the cornerstone of Christian faith. Without it, Christianity would be nothing more than moral philosophy or feel-good stories. But because Christ rose from the dead, we have a hope and message that this world desperately needs.

We Must Expect Some to Question the Resurrection

Paul addresses this reality in First Corinthians 15:12: "Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?" - 1 Corinthians 15:12.

The Corinthian church faced a unique problem. They believed Jesus had risen from the dead, but they struggled with the concept of future resurrection for believers. This doubt stemmed from Greek philosophical influence that viewed all matter as evil and spiritual things as good. Greeks couldn't imagine the soul returning to what they considered the prison of the body.

False teachings often infiltrate churches through casual conversations - in fellowship halls, Sunday school corners, or parking lots. Someone might ask, "Did you see that YouTube video that said..." or "Did you watch that Facebook post about..."

Just because something appears on the internet doesn't make it true. We must guard against teachings that can mislead us, remembering that Satan seeks to steal, kill, and destroy through deception.

We Must Understand the Consequences Without the Resurrection.

Paul presents seven devastating consequences if there were no resurrection:

1. Christ Has Not Been Raised (verse 13) If there's no resurrection, then Christ himself was not raised.

2. Our Preaching Is Empty (verse 14) The word "vain" means empty and pointless. All teaching and preaching becomes meaningless.

3. Your Faith Is Worthless (verse 14) Faith becomes a complete sham with no foundation.

4. We're Misrepresenting God (verse 15) We become false witnesses about God's power and character.

5. You're Still in Your Sins (verse 17) Without resurrection, there's no forgiveness or salvation.

6. Dead Believers Have Perished (verse 18) Those who have "fallen asleep in Christ" (died as believers) are simply gone forever.

7. We Should Be Pitied Most (verse 19) "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." - 1 Corinthians 15:19 (KJV)

If there's no resurrection, why gather for worship? Why give sacrificially? Why prioritize church over leisure activities? Why dedicate our lives to ministry when we could pursue more comfortable careers?

The early Christians faced real costs for their faith - potential loss of life, homes, jobs, and relationships. They were willing to sacrifice everything because they knew the resurrection was fact, not fiction.

We Must Live with Confidence in the Resurrection

Paul emphatically declares in verse 20: "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept." - 1 Corinthians 15:20 (KJV)

Ten Resurrection Appearances Scripture records at least ten occasions when the resurrected Christ appeared to people:

  • Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
  • Cleopas and his friend
  • The apostles without Thomas
  • The apostles with Thomas present
  • Over 500 people at one time
  • Seven disciples by the sea
  • The apostles during the Great Commission
  • James
  • Paul

Why the Evidence Is Compelling
  • Multiple people saw Christ, not just individuals
  • Groups witnessed him simultaneously
  • He appeared multiple times over 40 days
  • People didn't just see him - they touched him and ate with him
  • No one ever produced Jesus's body
  • The opposition was highly motivated to stop Christianity but couldn't
  • The geographical proximity made fabrication nearly impossible
  • The dramatic transformation in the disciples (especially Peter)

Extra-Biblical Support: Historians and early church fathers like Suetonius, Pliny the Younger, Josephus, and others wrote about Jesus and early Christians, supporting the biblical account.

We Must Remember That All Will One Day Acknowledge the Resurrection

Philippians 2:9-11 reveals the ultimate outcome: "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." - Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)

This includes heavenly forces, the earthly church, demonic powers, and even those who have opposed Christ. Everyone will eventually recognize Jesus's rightful position.

Life Application

The resurrection isn't just historical fact - it's the foundation for how we live today. This week, examine your life through the lens of resurrection reality. Are you living with the confidence that comes from knowing Christ conquered death?

Consider these questions:

  • Do I live each day with the assurance that Jesus is alive and active in my life?
  • How does the reality of resurrection change my perspective on current struggles and challenges?
  • Am I sharing this hope with others who need to hear about the risen Christ?
  • If I haven't personally accepted Christ as Savior, what's preventing me from calling upon Him today?

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is either "one of the most wicked, vicious, heartless hoaxes ever foisted upon the minds of men, or it is the most fantastic fact of history." The evidence overwhelmingly supports the latter. The question isn't whether the resurrection happened - it's whether you'll build your life upon this unshakeable foundation.
